Nina Peligro - The Quarrel cover painting

Not sure how I feel about this one, perhaps it needs a little reworking...? I used gouache on a really thick watercolour paper and although I liked the texture I think it may have hampered my attempts at a really smooth finish so I may give thiks another go on the good-old-reliable-smooth-illustration board.

My original idea was a completely different composition but I couldn't get it to work. Its a good thing too because I'm really happy with this angle and the way it turned out. The piece has movement and sums up the warped perception of the main character.

Thought I might post some art from another project in the works, Crashland. Testing out some layering with texts and text box colours. I'm hand lettering the entire thing which should be quite a challenge, and I will need to neaten my style up a lot of I want it to look professional. This is just a test run...

Hi all!

This is a look at my latest artwork "The Important Pieces". I've had a lot of interest from people viewing my Art Card work and many have asked if I do larger pieces. It has been something I've been working on for a while but have not had the chance to persue until now.

This original is 15.5 x 7 inches on an illustration board with an area of 16.5 x 8 inches. Painted in gouache.

I'll be posting this one for sale on ebay soon but I'm also considering making limited edition prints in various sizes, ranging from half the size to double. But I'll make another post about that later should anyone be interested.

Here is a piece I did a while back. It was a commission for two great buyers of my work from the US.

They had a few things they wanted in the piece, the main one was it just had to be colourful. Which was fantastic for me and the creative freedom on this one made it such an enjoyable piece to work on.

The final size was roughly 18 x 23 inches painted with gouache on illustration board.

This is a pencil sketch for a new piece I'm working on. I'm thinking of the title "Important Pieces" but that might change down the road as the painting evolves.

I'm always telling myself that its high time I start posting some of the larger work I do. And then I get sidetracked and either forget or think that I'll do it tomorrow.

Well not today!

Heres a piece I'm working on at the moment. It may become part of a bigger story, I'm not so sure yet. And I'm thinking along the lines of old tales.

I'm really intrigued by the evolution of stories over the centuries. One day a man went out fishing and there was a huge storm, then it evolves into a huge storm and he was saved by a goddess who carried a robe of silk. I'm just wondering if stories will ever have the chance to evolve in this day and age what with everything being recorded so vividly and uploaded either straight after it happened or while its happening.

I'm still layering the tones in the background and characters so they are more in sync with the ocean.

Still not sure what hairstyle to give her yet....

Every once in a while I create an ACEO piece that I'm completely happy with and this is one of them.

Wave Breakers is part of the Red Ribbon series and number 20 in the series of images. I'm exploring more of a narrative with each piece giving the impression that each image is part of a larger story or implying that something is just about to happen. This is one of those images that I think captures everything I visualized before I started sketching out the idea.

The Unfinished Dream

Water effects are always a tricky one. A large body of water like a pool or the ocean aren't so bad as you mainly colour it blue but the very thin film of trickling water gives the sense of a darker hue to the surface as well as a shean.

I think I got the hang of it in this one as I wanted a sense that the waves of the painting were starting to trickle into her reality and bringing the life of the ocean with it.

2010 was a fantastic year. I think I've created more painted artwork this year than any other, and more artwork that I am really proud of this year than any other. Alot of that can be attributed to all the people who graciously bought my original artwork. The fact that so many collectors came back for more than one piece of art makes me very proud and pushes me to produce better artwork every day. And for that I am truly grateful.

As Christmas draws near just wanted to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. Since its holiday time I'll cut back on the blog posts and ebay auctions but there will still be a few new pieces of art up for sale.

Here are a few samples of a comic book project that I was commissioned for by Princeton University Press. I don't think the project went ahead in the end but it was an interesting concept using math to solve a murder case. Sort of a CSI meets Numbers.

This new painting underway was inspired by a recent TV show presented by British designer Kevin McCloud titled "Kevin McCloud - Slumming It". Kevin spent two weeks in the Dharavi slum in the heart Mumbai, India.

Despite the poor sanitary conditions, lack of space and poor living standards with more than 1 million people crammed into a space roughly the size of 175 hectares, Kevin found there to be virtually no crime, and a huge sense of community and family where everyone looked after one another.

The people of Dharavi did not have the luxuries some of us often take for granted, but at the same time they made the most of what they did have. It's a really interesting documentary and if you have the chance to see it I highly recommend it.
